Bill Organizer Repurpose

It's time for another Junk Revision Challenge. About two month ago some bloggers and I who love to thrift and repurpose junk, got together to discuss a monthly blog hop where we transform so called "junk" into something better. This month we worked on "ORGANIZATIONAL PROJECTS" for the home office.

Before

I decided to repurpose a wooden Bill Organizer into a Desktop Organizer. I had found it at the thrift store for a couple of bucks. It was in pretty good condition except for one of the wood slats was missing and most of them were all warped and full of dust in between them.

The plan was to remove the wood dividers all out. It took a bit of elbow grease, but starting at one end I moved the slat from side to side wiggling it back and forth until it popped out of the groove. I wanted to save as many as I could intact to use for another project. Inevitably the first few got broken on the edges. But most of them were salvaged. I was left with the grooved back and at first thought of filling in the spaces with something, but then came up with an easier idea…

I took 3 of the dividers and glued them together with wood glue after I cut a bit off the back ends of them so that they would fit as one divider for the piece. I used whatever I could find as clamps.

So to cover up the grooves with something, I looked through my stash of scrapbook paper and found a package I had bought at Tuesday Morning a while back for just a couple of bucks. I thought the letters and numbers lent themselves well for a desktop organizer.

The next thing to do was to decide on a colour that would co-ordinate with the paper and I chose a light blue.

It was looking a little plain so I then added some green mixed with glaze and brushed it on and wiped it off to give the blue more of an aqua tint. Then I dry brushed some white onto the painted areas. It still wasn't speaking to me so I added my go to favourite… some antiquing GLAZE and did the same brush and wipe off technique. Then I was happy with it.

The wood areas just didn't seem to go with the paper at that point and so I painted them with a white acrylic in a thin coat so some of the wood colour would show through… and then added a few layers of the antiquing glaze letting them dry in between coats until I was happy with the results.

The scrapbook paper happened to be just the right width for the project and was thicker than your normal paper so it disguised the grooves really well. I used Mod Podge to adhere it to the inside and to the divider. I ended up with a bit of excess paper after bending it up and adhering it to the inside front and cut it off with an exacto knife. I also cut a strip of it to adhere to the front above the drawer.

Lastly I added a little bit of red and orange to the knobs to make them pop. I am really pleased with how it turned out. It's amazing what a little bit of paint and paper can do to give something a whole new look and a new life…
