Fall Mason Jars with Natural Decor

Fall Mason Jars with Natural Decor
I love a mason jar project, don't you, and so when I heard about a blog hop with my favourite bloggers on Hometalk, I couldn't wait to come up with an idea for Fall… I don't know about you but Autumn is my favourite season… and five years ago this Thanksgiving I came upon these and had to save them cause they were too unique not to...

guinea feathers… I love the natural polka dot pattern and gathered them together along with some more natural elements to layer onto jars and make them pretty for Fall or Thanksgiving… or even for a Fall Wedding!

Here is what you will need for this project:

  • medium sized jars
  • white burlap fabric or burlap printer sheets
  • oak leaves… real or artificial
  • guinea feathers and black feathers
  • burlap
  • fabric of your choice cut into strips
  • scissors
  • tags (painted mason jar tags)
  • paint
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
  • acorn tops (optional)

Easy Steps to getting the look…

1. Measure the width of your jar and cut a burlap strip around 2 inches high and the width of the jar to wrap all the way around.

2. Cut a thinner strip of fabric of your choice and wrap around burlap tying two knots at the end of it and cutting off the excess.

3. Carefully tuck your leaf in behind the knotted area.

4. Add your feathers on each side either behind or in front of the leaf. I changed it around for each jar.

5. Using some hot glue or some twine add some homemade or store bought tags.

Here is the tutorial on how to make the tags you see above… FAUX ENAMEL TAGS

I used some left over peanut butter jars because the burlap sheets were just long enough to wrap all the way, but you could use mason jars and add more fabric to make sure it goes all the way around. And the gingham fabric was from a shirt that I had worn out. I love how it looks against the natural tones of the leaf and feathers.

You could put whatever you like on the tags… numbers or letters. You could do the letters F A L L for Fall. I glued on double acorn tops on the outside edge of the first and last jar, but you don't have to. They would look cute with the initials of the bride and groom at a wedding don't you think?

I just wanted to do 3 jars so that they would fit in this little tool tote that I found at a Rummage Sale for $2. I decided to add the date for Thanksgiving this year, so that I can look forward to it and as a reminder to pace myself for upcoming Thanksgiving projects cause my memory is so bad.    ;o)

And I wanted them to fit in my Fall Vignette, so I kept them simple… and neutral

And I just love how they look together with the flower arrangement in the rust tool tote and how the leave reflect the same rusty tones…

I didn't add anything to the inside of them, but when I get the chance, I will definitely be buying some tea light candles and putting them inside. I think they would look great with lights in them don't you?

If you don't have oak leaves where you are you could use burlap sheets or fabric to cut them out of. I love how they look against this pallet wood pieced together and left out in the elements to gain a beautiful grey PATINA.

I think they add some great visual interest to my entry vignette. I used the same white burlap printer sheets to make the "Give Thanks" banner with. If you would like to know exactly how I made it you can find the tutorial HERE.

They really are very simple to make, and cost very little but make a pretty statement. Hope I have inspired you to get creative with some jars and items you can probably find in your backyard.

Blessings,
Lucy
