Bread Box Turned Craft Desk/Station

It's time for Themed Furniture Makeover Day again. This month's theme is "Storage/Organization". For this month, I wondered what I would use, but then I saw this BREAD BOX from the 70s in my stash that I had been wanting to give a new life...

I had picked it up at the thrift store ions ago for no more than $5. So as you guessed by the title, I figured I could turn it into a desk. Granted not an adult sized desk, but perfect for a child. I just needed to figure out what could be used for a base. And at first I thought I was going to use a child's wooden ironing board that had been in my booth and had not sold... but the proportions weren't right and it made the whole thing look top heavy. And the shelf on the bottom would get in the way of a child's legs... so onto plan B... trying to figure out what could be done with the limited tools at my husband's disposal and so I had him cut down some banisters to use as legs.

And I figured I could add this sad curbside find with missing glass and door to the whole equation as the bread box had the perfect spot on top to display it.

I went through the trouble of disassembling the slats as the fabric holding them together from the back was dingy and in pretty bad shape. The slats came out pretty easily, but if it isn't necessary to remove them if you are doing a similar project, I would skip this part.

Here you can see the banisters that were cut down to use as legs. My husband did a great job of hiding the screws in the indented sides of the front and behind the slat in the back. I decided to add some trim to the bottom two rows of cubbies in the once display cabinet. 

Since the plan was to make it for a child, I wanted to use a happy color, so I went with what was in my stash... "Miss Lillian's No Wax Chock Paint" in this lovely shade of Turqoise called... "Breakfast at Tiffany".  It took two coats and thankfully I had just enough to cover all of the pieces of the puzzle... (*I was compensated for this post with paint, but all opinions are my own.) I am in love with this color and it dries to a smooth a tough finish. It really doesn't need a top coat and with all of the small pieces that I had to paint, you gotta love one less step!

Here it is almost finished... The slats are in place but need to be held together with new fabric. I want the fabric to have a message on it which could be seen when you opened the top... but I ran out of time... so for now they are in place to give you an idea of what it looks like closed.

The chalkboard was made from my stash of cabinet doors. I hung it next to the desk on the wall for easier access by small arms. I also added a little container for holding the chalk which was a little display shelf that was meant to be hung vertically. I love that the sides are made of old wood rulers!

Here it is with the display cupboard all finished and stocked with crafting supplies. I love how it looks with the display shelf. Kind of reminds me of a mini postal sorting station.

The little metal catalogue tags were from my winnings from D. H. Lawless Hardware (September Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest). I think they look great! And the cubbies are perfect for easy access to rubber stamps and other crafting essentials.

Now all that's left is for me to do is find a small stool to tuck under the desk.  And I could see another small table that could be placed next to the rolltop desk since it is full of supplies. I would have loved to have had a craft station like this when I was a little girl. Hopefully it will be bought for a little girl or boy from my booth. It could even just be used on top of a child's table.
