Cupboard Door Turned Clock with Patina

Hope you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas! It's time for "Project Challenge" once again. This month the item up for challenge to use was "Old Books or Sheet Music".  I love the patina that old books have and love using them in diy projects every chance I get. Come see what myself and the others in the group have come up with and I'm sure you will be inspired...

So this is what I started with... some large square cupboard doors. I did quite a few of them all at the same time that I worked on my Farragoz clock face.

This is the basic technique that I began with. Gesso, and casein paint and using a putty knife to distress the paint when it was still wet. I layered several colors that I mixed myself.

Then I decided to design the clock face on my Silhouette Designer program. I printed it out and then projected it onto the door and pencilled it in.

Here it is all painted up and with the clock hands and mechanism. I found the clock kit at Hobby Lobby. The frame was a little too plain for my liking so when this month's challenge came up, I decided to see if some book pages might add more interest.

So I go out some old paper back books and started playing with the different papers. This was one option... but it covered up too much of the frame.

This option was a little more interesting, but with the alternating colors of the book pages was a little too distracting. I didn't want the attention to be on the frame, as much as on the clock.

When I placed one on top of the other, I liked how the different patterns and colors worked together. I decided to go with this for the finished frame.

As I was playing around with the positioning of the paper, and what shape to use... I decided keep the outer edges straight  and the inner edges torn and wavy.... I began by gluing the book pages to the outer edge using white glue.

and the hymnal with brown song pages as the outside edge, leaving part of the gray from the frame also visible to frame the clock's face. It's a subtle difference, but I think it adds some much needed interest to the otherwise plain painted frame.

These faux pointsettas were given to me last year. I wasn't crazy about the orange but couldn't bring myself to throw them out. I figured some paint or paper would help to improve them. So I ended up decoupaging some pages from an old music book onto the parts that were orange. I cut the pages a little larger than the leaf to be covered and used Mod Podge to adhere them. I held the book page in place until I was sure it was attached. Then when it was all dry I cut the excess edges of the book pages to fit the shape of the leaf underneath them. They each took about an hour to finish. You could add glitter to the edges of the book page leaves, but I kept mine simple for now... maybe next year I will do that.

For now they both sit on the mantle to remind me that this year is almost over and to make the most of each day...
