Gypsy Style Shelf Repurposed From Furniture Parts

Are you ready for another "Themed Furniture Makeover" blog hop!? For this month's theme of "Red, White or Blue" I decided to go bold. I love to repurpose and salvage junk so when I was given a vintage vanity more than two years ago i couldn't wait to transform it with paint, until I realized that all of the varnish was flaking off and it was falling apart... so plan "B" was to deconstruct it and salvage as much as I could from it...  and that's when the gypsy in me was inspired....

Here is what it looked like after I took a hammer to it. I was so excited to get to work that I forgot to take photos before deconstruction. ;o)

So you can see from this view, where the main part of the shelf came from. The back side of the back of the vanity. If you can imagine the curved cutout was where your knees might hit if you had long legs.

A few more components like the vanity front middle ledge, parts of a cupboard door, some roadside trim in green and some scalloped wood trim from Hobby Lobby. Hubby helped me to secure all the pieces together with screws.

Now to decide on the paint color and since I had won some "Fusion" paint in a blog drawing I decided to use the colors I had selected:  (I will post the name colors when I find the containers I threw out ;o)) a gorgeous rich blue and a pale green. I wanted it to be bright and slightly faded. I wanted it to have the look of a painted gypsy caravan...

The red of the wood stain is showing through under the blue and I love that. I did try red on the edges, but it looked a little too garish, so I did a subtle faded gold instead to accentuate the curved shape...

I dry brushed some blue onto the green to give it some more interest and to tie the two colors together.

I really love how all the shapes and details of all of the pieces work together and how it speaks to my gypsy soul. I actually found out from a cousin a few years ago that although my heritage is Portuguese on both sides of my parents, my mother's maiden name is of Hungarian origin... which explains the platinum blonde hair that she had and the gypsy blood that runs through my veins! ;o)

It is quite a heavy piece as the back is solid half inch board so for right now it is leaning on another piece of furniture until I can add it to a future guest bedroom which I will definitely decorate in a "Gypsy Style"! Until then I hope that I have inspired you to get creative with your furniture projects and to rethink those furniture parts that seem like junk!
