You know that I love Patina and that whenever possible I try to incorporate it into my projects. Well this month's project for the Fab
Furniture Flippin' Contest gave me the opportunity to do so with an amazing product and I am beyond excited to share with you my latest
furniture flip...
I knew that one of these highly textured pedestal tables I had bought for $10 would be perfect for this project... I forgot to take photos before I painted them all white, but I figured that would only add to the layering of colors.
This month's contest is being sponsored by
SALTWASH.
SALTWASH is a product that can be added to any kind of paint to create a textured and layered sun
and salt air soaked look. In their own words ..."Apply your mixture to any piece of furniture or surface to achieve an authentic time worn look, as if weathered from years on the coast, in just a few easy steps." (
*Disclaimer: Although I received product from them
for use in this challenge, all opinions are 100 % my own. )
I began by gathering together all of the leftover paint in coastal colors that I hand on hand and decided to go with a dark blue by "Fusion" paints as the base coat. I added enough Saltwash to make it the consistency of thick icing. The other colors were for layering on top of it.
The top was roughed up to look weathered and then I taped off 5 sections to look like different boards were put together to make the table top. I added the Saltwash to the dark blue and dabbed it onto the outer and middle panels not wanting the color too close to the edges. I used a plastic putty knife to gently flatten the crests of the Saltwash "icing" once it was partially dry. More colors where randomly added and then flattened out with the same putty knife. The other adjoining faux boards were painted in a light aqua color mixed with Saltwash in a more running consistency. It created peaks and valleys that were more subtle and didn't need to be flattened down. The last thing I did was add some glaze in a brownish color to the lighter "boards" and a black colored glaze to the dark blue panels to tone down the colors and unify them.
I was going to do two colors for the bottom but decided that the legs and base should have a unified paint treatment so that the star of the show was the faux plank board top.
I layered on all of the colours over what I began with to try and get a more unified look. My mouse sander came in handy for getting through the layers to uncover all of the colors beneath...
I
love how the glaze settled in the valleys of the textured Saltwash finish. I thought at this point that I was finished and went ahead and styled it and took photos... but wondered what it would look like with some stencilled lettering on it as though it was made from parts of a crate...
So out came my stencil set bought at Walmart. My favorite way to stencil is to use a glass saucer and a makeup wedge. I pounced lightly with the wedge so that the paint only settled on the raised parts of the table and not in the grooves. I was enjoying the process so much that it was hard to know when to stop. My munchkin helped me out by giving me a second opinion as he worked alongside me on his own Saltwash projects.
I am thrilled with the Saltwash product and with the finished results of the table... just like I had envisioned it.
I can't wait to play with it some more ! Hope I have inspired you to get creative with your furniture flips!

Beautiful..what type of paint did you mix with the saltwash...jessica
ReplyDeleteJessica, I used everything from latex oops paint, to small acrylic craft paint containers in various colours. The dark blue is a colour by "Fusion" paints. Saltwash works with most kinds of paints. Hope that helps.
DeleteI just love how it really looks like it is made from individual boards!! That is wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteI love how this looks. What a great paint treatment.

ReplyDeleteBev

ReplyDeleteThis table is amazing to say the least. Thank you so much for sharing all your steps for this make over. Where can I buy Salt Wash? I am so glad I found your site.
ReplyDeleteYou can go onto their website and find out the closest retailer near you. http://ilovesaltwash.com/ I have heard that it is sold on Etsy also. Best of luck finding it Anna.
DeleteThank you so much Lucy, I'm happy to have found your site! So much inspiration!
DeleteI absolutely love this -- very inspiring. Thank you for the motivation. Did you put a protective finish on the table?
ReplyDeleteMaryAnne
Thanks so much MaryAnne, always happy to inspire! I haven't put a protective coat on it yet. It definitely needs one though. ;o) I like to give the paint finish a long curing period. And I always have a hard time deciding between a wax top coat and a something longer lasting. Will probably end up putting some liquid clear wax by "Waverly". you can purchase it at Walmart. I don't like the fumes from Polcrylic. Hope that helps.
