Plain Cabinet becomes Beautiful Craft Storage

After Christmas, since we didn't spend it with either of our families who are about 1000 miles away in opposite directions, we decided as a family to make a trip to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. We stayed at a beautiful B&B and I had about an hour to do some junking before the shops all closed.

Luckily, there were some shops just across the street. The second one that I entered had a room in the back called the Pinterest Room and since I am a Pinterest Junkie, I just had to go in and see what was there...and then I spotted the ONE! This sweet little country style wall cabinet (spice/medicine cabinet?), that I just couldn’t pass up! It was missing the glass insert in the door, but since it had a real porcelain knob and was ONLY selling for $10 I scooped it up. I had found the perfect project piece that I had been hoping for and the paint was waiting for it back home.

The paint was a red barn color that I had picked out in November when I found out that I had been chosen as one of six bloggers who would be ambassadors of sorts for Prairie Colors Chalk Finish Paint. I was so excited for this opportunity, but being the perfectionist that I am even though I had 30 pieces already at home that I could have used, I was holding out for just the right one. When I saw the inside of this piece, I knew it was a match made in heaven!




The little cabinet was either covered in a shellac or polyurethane so I had made sure to sand it with a medium grit sandpaper before painting it.

Since it was missing the glass insert, I decided that I would replace that with a painted wooden panel. The back wall of the interior came with a flowered fabric backing that was so well glued on that it wasn't going anywhere...so, I decided to keep it and try to incorporate it as a design element.

For the cabinet door exterior, I chose this free image from the Graphics Fairy. I regularly use Graphics Fairy for my projects because I love the large selection of free vintage images that are great for DIY and crafting.

Once I had decide on the image, I wanted an inspirational phrase to go with it. Since my plans were to use this little cabinet as craft storage/organization to house and organize my containers of glitter, I chose the phrase… "CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL" ... and designed it with my Silhouette Studio design program.



Once I had printed the image, I placed it on top of the cabinet door to get a sense of what it would look like, but instantly felt like something was missing...it seemed like the flowers were floating in the middle of the door and that it needed something like an anchor, so I decided to add some corners for interest. I immediately thought of miniature brackets, but since I do not own a scroll saw as of yet, and could not find any premade ones at the craft store, I chose to use some vinyl to give the illusion of gingerbread trim detailing. As fate would have it, I had bought some red vinyl at Hobby Lobby a while back and it was an almost perfect match to the paint color I had used! Thank you Lord!



I looked through my stash of wood and had my husband cut a piece of thin board to fit the door. I painted it with an antique white flat paint that I had bought at Walmart. In an ideal situation, I would have simply printed out the image in reverse and used Mod Podge to transfer it, but as you can see from the image above my printer has been printing off on its colors for a while and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it...so the only other thing to do was to transfer it with some old fashioned typewriter copy film. (I found this box of copy paper at a garage sale). I then proceeded to paint it with flat acrylic paint that I had on hand.

The next thing to do was to cut the letters and faux brackets out of vinyl and attach them. Oh I almost forgot to mention that once I distressed the piece, the wood underneath was a little too orangey for my taste so I got out some Blackberry House glaze called Asphalt Road that I had on hand. I applied it with a fine point brush just to the areas that were bare wood and to the grooved areas to the left and right of the door.

This was my first experience using Prairie Colors Paint and I have to say that I am impressed with how smooth of a finish the paint has. You can't see any of the brush marks. And it does not require a top coat, unless it is distressed, which since mine was, I used Modern Masters Dead Flat varnish to protect it from wear and tear.

As you can see it is a perfect fit for my glitter supplies. And it feels great to get more organized even if it is only one project at a time!
