Cookie Tin Turned Winter Wonderland

Cookie Tin Turned Winter Wonderland
It's time for another Junk Revision Challenge. A monthly blog hop where we transform so called "junk" into something better. I love a good repurpose don't you! Come and check out what we each came up with this month and you may just be inspired! ...

This month we worked on "HOLIDAY PROJECTS". I don't know about you but this is actually the first year that I am ahead of my usual last minute decorating for the holidays. Thankfully blogging forces you to be ahead of the seasons… and my favourite… Christmas is already on my mind…

I had bought a few of these tins for $2 each at a yard sale. I loved the oval shape and the fact that the lid was indented and kind of like a frame… which led me to trying to use it as such and turn it into a work of art…

Inspired by the winters I spent in upstate New York, in the country, spotting all kinds of wild life… I tried to recapture that image in my head…

What you will need for this project...

  • cookie tin with indented lid
  • kraft paper or white paper
  • white felt fabric
  • roll of miniature wooden fence
  • felt trees
  • felt deer
  • faux evergreen stems
  • paper for mini banner
  • gold lettering stickers
  • pinecone floral picks
  • double sided tape
  • white craft paint
  • faux Cardinal or other bird of your choice
  • double sided tape or hot glue
I knew that I wanted to use a certain paper with a pattern that reminded me of the wind blowing the snow around. But the graphic on the tin was still peeking through, so I added kraft paper behind it. By keeping everything pretty much white, I wanted the deer in the background to stand out.

The package of felt deer was all males so to make a female I simply cut off the antlers, the tail, and a bit off of the feet to give it a slightly different look and I flipped the male over to face the other side removing the adhesive sticky tape that was on the back.

The peace banner was cut out of water-colour paper and an old manila file folder. I added the gold lettering that came in a package of sticky back Alphabet letters. The evergreen stems were a little too green, so I took a brush and brushed on some white paint to make it look like snow had fallen on them.

I shaped the fence to follow the curve of the hill in the foreground for added interest. I used double sided tape to adhere pretty much everything together but you could use hot glue.

I wanted it to be a bird's eye perspective through the pine tree. If you wanted the deer to be the focal point you could add a white bird instead of a red one.

I love that it can still function as a container and could be used to hold a Christmas present… and in this case the packaging is also the present…

Or I may use it in the middle of a large evergreen wreath for Christmas, but will have to flock the wreath first, or not… I am undecided as usual.

I am so pleased with the way that it turned out. To me it feels like a little piece of paradise… the patina is in the vintage tin that added the perfect backdrop for it. I can't wait to add it to the Christmas decor this year!

Wishing you peace and blessings,
Lucy

  5. Oh, my goodness, Lucy! I love it! And you make it look so easy. :-) I'm impressed with the early Christmas start. I really need to light a fire under my be-hind. My blog still has a fall banner done three months ago. And that was in the booth. The house got nothing. Sigh.
