DIY Christmas Ornament Blog Hop

I know Thanksgiving isn't here yet, but for those wanting to get a head start on Christmas, and needing a little inspiration for making your own ornaments, a few bloggers and I have gotten together our creative ideas for some...

When it comes to ornaments,  if you know me, you know that I love angels on a tree at Christmas, so again this year, I tried to come up with a simple angel ornament with an item from the Dollar Store.

When I am on the hunt for craft supplies, I always check out the wedding section of craft stores, or dollar stores, to find items that can be used for something other than what they were originally intended for. Every time I saw these little spoons at the dollar store, I knew that I wanted to come up with a craft idea to use them in...

So my challenge was to figure out a way to turn these little spoons into little angels...

Materials for Creating the Angel Ornament

For this Christmas Angel Ornament you will need:

• mini plastic spoons (from wedding section of Dollar Tree)
• piece of thin cotton fabric 
• crocheted ribbon (I found mine at Target)
• holly picks (Hobby Lobby)
• twine (Dollar Tree)
• evergreen sticks (Hobby Lobby)(for hanging ornament)
• glue gun and glue sticks
• good pair of scissors (for cutting fabric)

Step 1: Cut Pieces down to Size

The fabric which will become the rag dress should be about 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches.  The lace ribbon should be about 5 1/4 inches long.  And the twine for the halo should be about 4 1/2 inches.

Step 2: Adding the Rag Dress

To create the dress, simply cut a piece of cotton fabric about 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches.
Fold it in half lengthwise. With a good pair of fabric scissors, cut 1/4 inch wide strips a little bit more than halfway up the doubled fabric.
Now fold the uncut top part over as in the picture above. Roll the folded piece around the neck of the spoon. Don't glue yet.

Step 3: Adding the Holly

Fan out the holly so that the leaf in the front is in the middle and the others are even on each side. I cut off one of the berries with a pair of strong scissors. (It just didn't look good with two berries... trust me! ;o)
Next bend the wire of the holly pick over to its back as in the photo above. You will use the stem of the pick to insert into the top of the dress. (You may need to loosen the fabric so that the stem will ft down the top part of it). At this point you can add a dab of hot glue to the rag dress so that it doesn't unravel and holds the holly in place. (Be careful not to glue the dress to the spoon yet). Turn the open end of the fabric to the back so that it is not visible.

Step 4: Adding the Wings

Tie your piece of 5 1/4 inch crocheted ribbon at the base of the spoon as though it was a scarf. Tighten as hard as you can.
Once it has been tied, you can cut the bottom outside edges at a curve, so that they more resemble wings.
At this point you can go ahead and hot glue all the pieces in place from the back.

Step 5: Adding the Halo and Hanger

Pinch the ends of your 4 1/2 inch piece of twine together and adhere to the back of the spoon so that it sits just above the "head" of the angel.
I decided to use the evergreen stick to hang the angel on the tree as it helped the lace "wings" to stay in place and stay straight. And it made the angel seem as though it was floating on the tree...

I wanted it to have a Primitive American look so I kept it simple and am happy with the way it turned out. You could add some tea stains to the fabric to make it look more Prim, but I liked the stark white against the off white lace wings and shiny silver head.

I hope I have inspired you to make some for Christmas this year. They are very simple and so affordable.
